chawkie in excel 365 we have textsplit and textjoin and lambda helper functions so try this:

=LET(in,X1:X3, grid,TEXTSPLIT(TEXTJOIN(",",,in),";",","),BYCOL(grid,LAMBDA(c,SUM(IF(c="a",1,0)))))
