Dec 17, 2019Top feedback summary for December 17
Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.
Hey everyone, we’re back again with the latest top feedback summary for the new Microsoft Edge.
This week we’re happy to highlight that the extensions store now supports search, addressing one of our top feedback items. Thanks for the feedback that helped drive the development of this feature!
On a related note, we’d like to share our thinking about feedback that you’d like to see support for “mouse gestures” in the new Microsoft Edge. This feature would allow users to perform basic to advanced browser functions through simple gestures with the mouse. In the previous Microsoft Edge we supported mouse gestures through an extension that was authored by Microsoft, but we don’t think that we’ll need to do the same for the new Microsoft Edge because there are existing Chromium-compatible mouse gesture extensions. Today our extensions store opened for new submissions, and we expect that one or more of these existing extensions will be submitted to our store by their owners. If this doesn’t happen, we’ll reconsider our approach. In the meantime, users can install Chromium-compatible extensions from other stores. See our help article for instructions on how to do this.
We also have a new discussion post this week on the topic of bringing back the reading list feature from legacy Microsoft Edge. While we aren’t planning to do this right away, or use the same approach we used before, we do plan to investigate how we can build something customers will love. To learn more, head over to the discussion post and share your thoughts on the future of reading list.
Finally, a quick mention that this is our last update of the year as the team takes a break for the holiday season. There will be no Dev channel updates or top feedback updates on December 24 and December 31. We will be back with another update on or around January 7, and of course we’re all looking forward to general availability on January 15. We want to send a big thank you for helping us build the new Microsoft Edge in 2019. Happy holidays and see you next year!

When will a containers-like feature finally make this list?
- BigTooth1Copper ContributorI'm glad to see that the "square tab / tabs reaching the top of the window" issue is still alive.
Liking the beta and looking forward to more.- archtechIron Contributor
Yeah I've noticed this one for the past few versions already. Originally this was square (almost, it wasn't perfectly square) just like the current Edge UWP. Funny thing is, Google Chrome is still have square (almost) Min, Max/Restore, Close buttons. Also when you make a PWA, the window buttons are perfectly square. So it is only slim rectangle when on normal Edge browser window.

Has Secure DNS lookups been removed? I was using this feature since it was implemented, but noticed a few days ago that I could no longer access certain sites. I live in Indonesia and sites like Reddit are banned. Using Secure DNS lookups on Chrome and Firefox I can access them.

Which channel/version are you using?
secure DNS is available on the latest version 81.0.385.0 canary

Version 80.0.361.23 Dev
But it was there before, i was using it. Last few days it disappeared.

David Rubino Will extensions be synced to Android Edge ("Enable sync of installed browser extensions between devices")? Extensions on Android Edge is the killer feature to make Edge better than Chrome. That would get me using it (as it already has the other killer feature I need - inline translation like Chrome) and that in turn would encourage me to switch to Chromium Edge on Linux on my laptop when it becomes available.
- I would love that but for that to happen, first Microsoft should create a browser version of Edge that supports extension, like Forefox. but I haven't seen any Chromium based browser to be able to run extensions on mobile OS.
- xlollomanxCopper ContributorThe only one chromium based browser that can handle extesions are yandex browser and kiwi browser for now. I'm using kiwi atm. Browsing without an adblocker is a suicide nowadays.

Hi! Dear Developers,
Have you ever use Firefox? It have a scrollable tabs bar. In Chrome before version 37, there was a flag named stacked-tab-strip in desktop version. But now it only works in mobile version.
I hope Microsoft Edge Team can add this function. I need it very much. If I open 30 tabs in Edge, I can not get any useful information from tab bar which is blank or just show the icon in a little space.
I am not an English native speak. So I give some website to let you know what I mean:

Thank you.
Best wishes!
- It is a nice feature, when I tried Vivaldi it had this feature too and it's also a Chromium based browser.

Microsoft Edge should learn a lot from Vivaldi

David Rubino I like using the new Chromium browser but until the New Tab page allows me to set it to either a blank page or a custom URL, I can't use it as my daily driver. This recommendation has been on your feedback list for 17 weeks. Please make this a priority after release on January 15th.

Hi,
you can already do them both.
This is the cleanest you can get. use the NTP layout to set it like this.
You can also set a web page to be opened on startup
- rhrmnCopper Contributor
Yes, I have. I would like to set a custom URL for the NTP due to personal preference for the Google search engine over the Bing search engine. The results I receive from Bing are not as helpful as the results I receive from Google. I know that I can set my default search engine to Google and search a NTP using the address bar, but I would prefer to switch the NTP from Bing search to Google search.

There may be 'backlash' for saying this, but, oh well...
Sometimes giving heaps of concern, focus or attention to NTP seems hard to grasp. Sometimes it is hard to grasp the point of NTP, initially. Seems could function fine without it, at all. No, not advocating that, just saying... For all it does or for whatever need it fills, personally, Bing home page offers more search functions plus, all the same things as NTP. Only bummer with Bing.com, right now, it won't do Dark, BUT, it will soon. And, there are a couple of Feed settings in NTP that are, also, coming to Bing soon.
I'm sure it's just me, but, sometimes it's hard (for me) to grasp NTP issues being make-or-breaks for the browser.
Cheers,
Drew- Spoiler

why?
- thefaceCopper Contributor
David RubinoSorry, but I have to say that your view on the mouse gesture part is very flawed. All the available extensions so far make me click the right mouse button to activate the gesture. That is not smooth or convenient at all. In Edge I just swipe left an right, smooth and comfortable. That is browsing how I was used to even since the old Macbook days 2009. Not supporting it makes me simply stay away, since a comfortable use of the browser isn´t given. Terrible decision, seriously.
PS: You seem not to understand, that the general problem isn´t a big deal using an actual mouse, but the built in touchpads of most laptops
- rtransformationBrass Contributor
David Rubino Still, want the ability that right-button click of mouse can give different search engine options at given selected words or sentences on the webpage.
