Sync isn't available for this account
I have two profiles. One uses my Microsoft employee account and the other uses my personal O365 business account. For some reason, my personal account will not sync bookmarks and states "Sync isn't available for this account". I can't find any info on this issue.
Can anyone provide insight? Is it a bug?
LordDelacroix There's a lot of things happening in this thread. Sync is absolutely available for regular users and specific enterprise users as seen here. There are a few things around sync that are not currently enabled, history sync being the biggest one. If sync is still not working for you based on these prerequisites, I'd love to be able to help you out a bit more on a personalized level. Please create a new thread and ensure to tag me in it so I get a notification for the post.
To make it clear, I'd really rather everyone didn't do what I just asked LordDelacroix above. If you are in this thread already and still having an issue with sync please respond to this message. Provide a screenshot, if possible, and details on what type of account you have (either a personal account, or one listed in the link above). I want to help you out, but with so much going on in here, it's hard to parse who's having what issue right now.
If you are a new person stumbling upon this thread, are having issues with sync, and don't see an answer that will help you, please create a new thread. We review our forums daily (M-F, Pacific time) and will take the time to address as many people as we can. Sync is a particularly frustrating pain point for users like yourselves, and we try to make an effort to help those running into these issues. Appreciate the understanding of our process and patience with us while we work through getting to as many of you as possible. 🙂

- GreginAuburnCopper ContributorEasy Fix...just go back to Google Chrome. It is same backend and they let you use your work account and personal account and sync no problem without paying for an Enterprise level account on the backend. I am an Office 365 Premium subscriber and would THINK it included but nope, so easy answer is to just stick with Chrome. Every time Microsoft comes close to winning me over they disappoint me....so sad.

GreginAuburn am really keen to get away from insidious and pervasive Chrome tracking/profiling so Edge Chromium is worth a bit of faff

GreginAuburn my thoughts exactly!

I have tried with the AD account, using DOMAIN\USERNAME - sync not possible.
But with USERNAME@DOMAIN, sync is working.
It is the same account...

Harry Pfleger - ms-am looks like this is implemented in v81 beta (next release):
On-prem Active Directory account auto sign in will only be targeted to organizations that turn it on. If users were already signed in with an on-prem AD account, they will now be able to sign out of it. Now, users will only be automatically signed in with the primary account on their operating system if it is an MSA or an Azure AD account. Admins can enable auto sign in with an on-prem AD account using the ConfigureOnPremisesAccountAutoSignIn policy.
So this should be coming down the pipe to Stable soon hopefully(?)

It seems that at least an Azure PREMIUM P1 subscription at $6 per user per month is needed for Enterprise State Roaming 😞
If not in the free plan, I think it should be included in the Office 365 apps plan because right now, having Office 365 Business Premium is not enough for Edge sync to work.

Siegfried_Beitl, I am in the same boat and I agree with your suggestion about how this the sync feature should be licensed.

Darn thanks for looking into it.

Hi Siegfried_Beitl, do you have confirmation from Microsoft that Enterprise State Roaming is required in order for Edge sync to work?
- Eric79xIron Contributor
Ryan Steele Enterprise State Roaming is for Windows 10. While the new Edge data could be included in a roaming profile, this is most certainly not required for account sync.
The Edge team has stated previously that sync is one of their top priorities to get working.

SteveDMSFT I have just managed to get sync working in MS Edge Chromium although not ideal for enterprise. Currently all our users log into their devices as domain\username so therefore MS Edge creates a profile with the same details. If a user creates a new profile within MS Edge using their UPN, in our case this is the same as their email address, then MS Edge is happy to sync Favourites, Settings etc.
(If a user logs into the device with their UPN then MS Edge would automatically create a profile with that UPN).
We currently use ADFS for our authentication so not sure if this is a constraint of that - we currently have a call open with Microsoft for this very reason as asking users to create a 2nd MS Edge profile, or log into their device with their UPN is not practical.

Tred44 Hi Tred, we experience the same exact thing. The only way is to create a secondary profile and log in again.
Do you by any change deploy Edge Enterprise with GPO or SCCM?
Kind Regards,
Kaspar Danielsen
- Tred44Copper Contributor
Kaspar_Danielsen We deploy with SCCM. We're currently deploying Stable Channel v80.0.361.48 .msi as a package and then Software Updates looks after any updates.
I have just installed Beta Channel version 81.0.416.20 and when you open MS Edge, it doesn't auto sign in therefore allowing the user to select a profile with the usual choice between Workplace account or Microsoft account.
What isn't clear is how this will impact users on the Stable channel who already have a profile when version 81.0.416.20 is released.

SteveDMSFT I have the opposite problem - my personal office365 syncs bookmarks and passwords just fine, but my work account will not sync on Edge.
I agree there is a horrible lack of documentation about the new Edge sync process and settings.
- Ryan SteeleBronze Contributor
Eric79x I'm seeing this as well. My guess is that in order to sync the Edge profile on a work account, Enterprise State Roaming must be enabled, which requires an Azure AD Premium or Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) subscription, as documented here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/devices/enterprise-state-roaming-enable
Edit: It sounds like Enterprise State Roaming may not be required after all, but rather this feature just hasn't been implemented yet.
Edit 2: I have found the documentation for this feature here: Microsoft Edge Sync. TL;DR: One or both of the following must be true for sync to work:
- The Azure Information Protection service is enabled for your tenant
- The Azure Active Directory Enterprise State Roaming (ESR) feature is enabled for any user or tenant
If both AIP and ESR are disabled, users will see an error message indicating that sync is not available for their account.

Syncing is very basic feature for a modern browser, it's very bad if requires premium subscription

Eric79x i have the same issue - guessing AzureAD/O365 accounts not supported yet

Hi, guess you have figured it out....
Got this problem in my organization today as we rolled out Edge Chronium. Among all thing I read, this posting was one of them. My findings is that a "work/school account" signed in at Edge Chronium need to have a verifyed account and after verification need to re-signin into Edge. Several of our users have tested this procedure and it works all the time.- kurtnguyenBrass Contributor
Raymond_666 can you share how to verify a work/school account?
- Raymond_666Copper Contributor
kurtnguyen
Sorry about that, it might look like it does'nt work. Or..
Status is: "Investigating".
In short: You verify your account by phone (text code) and email (code in a email).
After that, we was able to set sync on... And it stayed on.. Or it looked like it. Nice green message, sync is on, like the other accounts that I am syncing.
Then we enabled multifactor auth for our users, and got a issue there. Now, we are not able to enable sync again even after removing the multifactor requirement for the users.
Have to look into this during the evening/tomorrow. Again sorry!

Just to follow up on this, my issues went away. My problems were caused by having a work and personal account with the same email address. Microsoft no longer supports that and won't let users create work and personal accounts from the same email. I was able to sync after I changed my personal email to an outlook.com address. So in short, I had 3 accounts:
1) Microsoft employee "work account"
2) My own O365 "work account"
3) A personal account with the same address as #2.
I flipped my personal to something@outlook.com and sync started working.

SteveDMSFT I have seen many problems with folks (including me) who used their work office365 account to create a personal Microsoft account as well. It really messes up Windows Store and office365 MFA.
Now that you've posted that, it makes sense to me, b/c of my experience with it, that it would totally mess up your sync settings on Edge.

I had the same issue. It was working fine in the beta version but not the released version. So I signed out in the browser settings. Then signed back in and it prompted me to sync while I signed in. I said yes and it's working now.
My Version: 80.0.361.66 (Official build) (64-bit)
