Inking on Web Pages - Discussion
We have received a lot of feedback about supporting inking annotations for web pages like what we have in the current version of Microsoft Edge. Many users have told us that they use this functionality as a daily driver and would like to see it in the new version of Microsoft Edge as well. We would like to understand the scenarios in which you would use this functionality. Details about what you use it for, what are the expectations about availability of different tools, saving and sharing options etc. would be extremely useful in making sure we provide the best user experience to you. Your input will help us making sure that the feature works best for you.

This is a real bummer. Thousands of educators across the world have relied on the inking feature that was removed. You all need to bring it back asap. I would personally use the inking feature to annotate on different website to explain concepts to my students. Elliot Kirk

Elliot Kirk I'm actually so baffled at the decision to take this out in the new update. Being able to take web notes is literally the only reason that 90% of the people that use edge over chrome use edge over chrome. It was the one thing that edge had going for itself that no other browser could compete with. Who thought it would be a good idea to remove it???

Are you even listening? You posted this 9 months ago! Where is the inking? Not some new crap! I want the exact same functionality I had since 2017!Elliot Kirk

It needs to work like it did before. I am a teacher. I used it weekly to highlight important information on website or even write directions on how to use a website. If you haven't noticed, schools are going online everywhere. We need this YESTERDAY! That, or give us the Legacy Edge back until this one is actually ready. What's the point in owning a Surface Pro if I can't use it?Elliot Kirk
- profelunaCopper ContributorI am an educator. I hope I can go back to the old edge, I did not realize annotating would not be possible on the new version. In the educational setting, my students use it on their devices to write on documents provided by different teachers, save their annotations, and submit them for points. For DISTANCE LEARNING, I was going to use it to annotate on whatever I was presenting on my Teams Meeting with my students to better explain the concepts. Please add this feature ASAP. Thank you.

I also want that feature right now. I need this feature Right Now. Why can't you just copy and paste the source code that made that feature?

profelunaI was in the same boat. I installed the new Edge and was really surprised when the pen was gone. I posted on MS and learned that you can uninstall the new Edge and it will take you back to the old Edge. I now have my pen back. About half of my students are coming back to in person learning and half are going to be virtual. This will certainly be a year like no other!

Elliot Kirk I did not know about this feature until just recently. I work for a University and with the recent move to teach as many classes as possible online this is a feature that could be really useful. I can see both students and instructors using this. This could be one of those things that gets people to move away from Chrome. There is an extension for Chrome that allows this but if it is built in and no one has to install and set it up that makes it a lot easier to convince students and instructors to use one over the other. The trick is getting people to know to know it exists.
I can also see using this for my job as well. I often bookmark sites for how to on programming or features that have yet to be setup or used in the systems I administer. It would be nice to be able to highlight key things to remember when I go to implement or input notes. I would not want to move these over to One-Note or something else because the info on the website could be updated. So when I go to work on using it I need to go to the actual site and not just a copy of the information at the time I looked at it.

Hello Elliot Kirk
It would be great if we could annotate web pages (the annotations staying in place on the page when scrolling) and to be able to save and export that to Onedrive and/or Teams.

Elliot Kirk I am an educator. Before my laptop updated this morning, with no forewarning that the Inking tool would be removed, I used the Inking feature to teach reading and math to my summer school students. Luckily, I was able to quickly notice Microsoft Whiteboard and snipped the fraction models I would need for today's lesson and pasted them onto the whiteboard. While I like the whiteboard, being able to mark directly on the webpage was the most efficient way to teach my students. I also am a tutor so being able to write on webpages is vital to my career, in and out of school. As a graduate student, I used the Inking tool to highlight and make notes while reading articles for research and assignments. I need this tool to return.

Hey there, Elliot Kirk
I think this would be incredibly useful, both at University as I can annotate the web page for my assignment. I can also see this been widely used at school too.
The ability to add comments like you can in office, and share it with other people in a group is something I could use it for. Especially if it is a research activity and I needed to create notes from it, and was working in a group.
With that, it could store a copy of this on OneDrive where I can share it with other people within my group, and we can all edit it from there. This is what OneNote allows us to do with it's extension.
The use of different colours will be good. Especially if we were able to all see the web page we were annotating. Different colours for different people, but also different topics. I could see this been done in schools as well.
I know this will be possible because the old version of Edge allowed this and saved it as a local copy on your computer.
At the moment I use the OneNote extension which copied the page to OneNote online where I can annotate it from there.

This is certainly a useful feature. However, there is a need of a pen or any other pointing device better than a mouse if used on desktop.
If you are enabling the feature on handheld device then no extra device is needed.
I can use this feature on my desktop while reviewing the mockups to give feedback.
Or take notes while reading a blog.
