I know that this is an old topic, but I have just found a simple solution, completely by accident!
To open a favourite in a new tab, just drag and drop that favourite into the main part of the window (where the web page content is shown). This works from both the favourites bar, and the drop-down favourites list.

The only solution that works is this:
1. Disable the Favourites bar (Go to edge://settings/appearance#CustomizeToolbar, set the "Show favourites bar" option to Never.)2. Disable the Favourites button (Go to edge://settings/appearance#CustomizeToolbar, disable the Favourites button)
2. Go to: edge://favorites
3. Pin the Favourites page (right click the tab and select Pin tab)
From now on, your Favourites are accessible from the pinned Favourites tab and will ALWAYS open in a new tab from that page.

Good work around, but the first 2 steps are unnecessary"

You can just do the steps 3-4 (even though your steps are incorrectly numbered) you listed and it will work.
They have stripped "ALL" other ways to make "Always open Favorites in new Tabs" out of Edge. Why, only they know........ And for some reason they seem to refuse to let us in on their reasoning.......

I truly HATE Microsoft....
For those who want the old "Work Around" to actually work....
I've been able to do so by putting the "Shortcut" code on BOTH the Properties of the Shortcut in the Start Menu, AND the Properties of the shortcut if you have the Shortcut pinned to the Taskbar.
Anyway, putting the code in BOTH shortcuts makes it work for me. If I do just one, like the one in the Start menu it WILL NOT WORK.
(though I haven't yet tried if just putting it in the Taskbar one only will work)FYI....
Oh, and why.... do I hate Microsoft more? My biggest HITS!!!
- Give us a worse Start Menu in 11.... Sure, it's fine for those with a few programs, but for people like me who have up to 100 Programs all Organized, Labeled, and Sized Nice in Win10's Start Menu, easy to see and get, 11's is literally UNUSABLE...!
Why couldn't they at least give us PROS 10's menu in Windows PRO at least? I mean, it's what PRO is for, us PRO's.- 11's Explorer Menu, again UNUSABLE for us Power Users.... 11's Explorer menu is someone's personal THEME, NOT designed for the masses. Shame on them.
Again, provide the original in PRO at least...!
We shouldn't have to use a 3rd Party program just to get BASIC functionality to work like we need, with things we TOUCH many times a day.- Forcing us into MS Outlook Mail....
Terrible UI, can't read things well like with "Mail & Calendar" it's very well done.
No Unified Inbox.
Intrusive AD.... when they have lots of "blank space" they could put ads if they need them "so badly".
Making the Ad look like an email is just a *** move.
These are my biggest current HATES atm... I have many little ones.

Visliar I found the best solution for this is to switch to Vivaldi. No need to change any settings. It just works. Give it a try and see if you like it.

Visliar Just press 'ctrl' key on your keyboard before clicking on a bookmark or link (not so sure about link but works for me with bookmarks/favorites)

If anyone is listening at Microsoft please bring this setting back, and make setting availabe in Intune. It is very useful in single app Edge Kiosk Mode.

Bring it back please
- TCannyCopper ContributorIf you're using an external mouse, just middle click on the bookmark to open in a new tab. (If you have a scroll wheel, clicking on this usually works as a middle click.)

Download TAB ACTIVATE from chrome store. Install - Restart your computer and bookmarks will open in new tab and move to it immediately exactly as in Firefox.
- petewinkCopper ContributorJust to clarify I am referring to Microsoft Edge.
- Captain_ShoeCopper ContributorNope, doesn't work. Bookmarks still open in the currently active tab.

Dennis5mile OMG!! You have saved my sanity! I have been looking for a solution to this issue for well over a year now trying to find an extension in the Chrome or Edge stores that will do this (can't believe none exist, BTW) or to tell me where I overlooked this in the Settings... (again, I REALLY can't believe this is not an option as is evident by this and many posts I've seen requesting this feature!) or even a way to make this change in the config settings, but to no avail. This is something that is EASILY accomplished in Firefox and has been for as long as I can remember (that and Colorful Tabs which is STILL not a thing in a Chromium-based browser and I am not sure why that is either, but I digress...) and I have been going mad trying to figure out how to accomplish what I thought should be relatively straight-forward. The only caveat to this that I see since I added this option is it appears to add to the amount of RAM that Edge uses, but we'll see if that is a major factor.
Again, thanks for this! Though I'm sure I will forget it's there from time to time and still right-click, I'm glad I no longer have to!
- Captain_ShoeCopper ContributorYes, thank you, these instructions worked for me 🙂
- DavidWarner55Copper ContributorTo always open favorites in a new tab in Microsoft Edge, you can follow these steps:
Open Microsoft Edge and click on the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner.
Click on "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
Scroll down and click on "Cookies and site permissions."
Click on "Manage permissions" under "All cookies and site data."
Under the "Sites that can always use cookies" section, type "edge://favorites" and click on the "Add" button.
Click on the "edge://favorites" link to open your favorites.
Right-click on a favorite and select "Open in new tab" or "Open in new window."
Close the original "edge://favorites" tab.
From now on, your favorites will always open in a new tab when you click on them.
Note that this setting will only apply to favorites and not other links. If you want all links to open in new tabs, you can change the "Open links from other programs" setting in the "System" settings menu.- Captain_ShoeCopper Contributor
Your instructions aren't applicable after 'Scroll down and click on "Cookies and site permissions."' any more.
If you look through the settings page you indicated on the most recent official build of Edge will see that the options are different from the rest of your instructions. - FancoreCopper Contributor
