Duplicate functionality due to added functionality (1st of July)

In July additional functionality will be added to several Microsoft products, in this case I have a customer that currently has Microsoft 365 E3 and a separate Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 license.

Both licenses will be renewed on the 31st of march, therefore an annual subscription until 30th of march 2027. In July the functionality of de Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 will become part of the Microsoft 365 E3 plan.  Will it be possible to cancel the remaining months of the Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 license or do we need to accommodate for this and change the Defender for Office license to monthly and then cancel the subscription the 1st of July?

Great question. I hope this will be covered in the CSP Partner Enablement sessions at some point soon.

    Hi Pascal3

I believe that in this scenario, you should be able the cancel the license at it will become redundant, similarly to how you can request cancelations for redundant licenses when upgrading from E3 to E5 but already have some of the add on components.

To cancel a duplicate or redundant subscription after an upgrade, use the AI assistant if available, or submit a ticket manually.

      Dear Robert,

      Thank you for the answer!

That is exactly what I would like that will happen.  The question is if this can be confirmed,  that it actually works. Or do we have to test it?

Unfortunately there is no documentation that confirms this. I would think this is something that Microsoft will clarify as we get closer to the 1st of July.
