What Happens with a Factory Reset on a Device

What happens when I use Office 365 Admin to initiate a Factory Reset on an iPad? One of my users had his iPad stolen. I initiated a Factory Reset on the device. (Never had to do this before.) The Admin Portal said the reset was "Scheduled." What exactly does that mean? What makes the event actually take effect?

    When and if device gets online and contacts Exchange Online, it will trigger the reset.
