onmicrosoft.com - Which domain to use

New to Office 365.  Would really like to setup accounts for my users with a domain other than onmicrosoft.com.  

 

Background - I am part of a church that has had many volunteers over the years in the computer space, etc. 

We have an old 2008 R2 server I would like to migrate from.  Currently have a domain specific for that on-premise domain.  User logon to the domain from their PC's  Years after this was setup, someone else went out and create another domain for website and email hosting.  It has a completely different domain name.  So I have 2 domains - one for on prem AD and another that is used for email addresses.

 

How should I proceed?

    I believed you could migrate your email address Domain to Office 365 and make it as primary Domain for communication, did you own the MX record on DNS hosting?

     onmicrosoft.com are default Domain for ALL tenant
