Access 2608 Build 20326: Line controls disappear in Print Preview

I believe there may be a regression in Microsoft Access Build 16.0.20326.20034 (64-bit) affecting Line controls in reports.

I can reproduce the problem even with a completely new blank MDB database, so it does not appear to be related to an existing application.

Steps to reproduce:

1.Start Microsoft Access 64-bit Build 16.0.20326.20034.

2.Create a new blank MDB database.

3.Create a new report in Design View.

4.Add a Line control to the Detail section.

5.Add a Rectangle control to the same section.

6.No VBA code or special event handling is required.

7.Select Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer.

8.Open Print Preview.

Actual result:

The Rectangle control is displayed correctly, but the Line control disappears in Print Preview.

The problem is not specific to a particular printer. We have reproduced it with multiple printers.

Expected result:

Both the Line and Rectangle controls should appear in Print Preview and in the printed output.

Workaround:

Rolling Microsoft Access back to an earlier build immediately resolves the problem. The same MDB file and the same report then display and print the Line control correctly.

We have also reproduced the issue with Build 16.0.20326.20044 (64-bit).

Has anyone else been able to reproduce this with Version 2608 / Build 20326?

Sinds the update of 08-2026 our reports that have multiple pages the printout on the second page is a miniature (1/8th) of the first page which renders fine.  All subsequent pages render as somewhat like a thumbnail.  Reverting to the previous access exe from a backup for MS access for O365 and Ms access runtime restores the correct layout

This looks like a rendering regression in the Access build rather than a report design issue, especially since you reproduced it in a new MDB and with Microsoft Print to PDF. I would keep one tiny sample database with only the report, one Line control, and one Rectangle control, then attach screenshots from Design View and Print Preview when reporting it. For production reports, the practical workaround is to replace critical Line controls with very thin Rectangle controls until the fixed Current Channel Preview build reaches your channel. I would also test ACCDB and MDB separately, because that helps Microsoft confirm whether the problem is tied to the old file format or the report renderer itself.

It would seem that you didn't read my previous reply before writing your post. The issue was reported to the Access team and a fix was done the same day.  The fixed version was released to Current Channel Preview as version 2608 build 20326.20072 yesterday (2026-08-12)

  • After reading the thread at Access World Forums, I confirmed the issue in Beta Channel 2609 and informed the Access team. Within a few hours, I was informed that the problem had been fixed and that it would resolved in Current Channel Preview 2608 20326.20056 which will likely be released in the next few days. Beta channel is also being fixed.

The issue does not occur in Current Channel 2607

I'm having this exact issue as well. Found that changing the line height above 0 makes the line visible but also makes it slanted.

Using a height >0 will always create a slanting line. However, in my tests, that didn't make it visible in print preview

Thank you for pointing that out.

Just to clarify the situation, I originally posted this issue here in the Microsoft Access Tech Community on August 9. However, the post was automatically flagged as spam and remained unpublished for more than a day.

Since the post was not publicly visible and I wanted to confirm whether other Access users could reproduce the issue, I then started a discussion at Access World Forums.

After I contacted the Microsoft Tech Community team, they reviewed the post, confirmed that it had been missed during their normal spam review process, and released it for publication. That is why the discussion at Access World Forums had already progressed considerably by the time this post became publicly visible here.

I apologize for not making the cross-posting situation clear earlier. I did not intend to seek separate answers without disclosure; the second discussion was started because this original post was still unavailable to the public.

For reference, the Access World Forums discussion is here:

    https://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/threads/access-2608-build-20326-line-controls-disappear-in-print-preview.335661/

Thank you for pointing out the forum etiquette. I will make sure to disclose any cross-posts clearly in the future.

  • Your clean MDB reproduction, two affected 16.0.20326 builds, multiple printers, and immediate success after rollback strongly isolate an Access 2608 rendering regression rather than report design or a printer driver. Since Rectangle controls still render, use a thin rectangle with no fill as a temporary substitute for each Line control, and verify Print Preview and exported PDF output. Keep the minimal MDB and record the affected and known-good builds. Install the next Current Channel update when available and retest before redeploying; avoid leaving machines pinned to an old build longer than necessary. In Access, submit Help > Feedback with diagnostics, the sample database, reproduction steps, and screenshots. If the reports are business-critical, have the Microsoft 365 administrator open a support case and provide the same artifacts. Microsoft must confirm the defect and servicing fix, but your evidence is strong enough to avoid redesigning the database.

I ran into the very same problem this evening.  I place a subtotal line on my report and it does not appear in print preview.  In this particular report I use a vba function to place the subtotal line a certain number of pixels from the top margin and a certain number of pixels from the left margin, for a specific length.  When I actually print to create a pdf, the subtotal line appears on the report but it's not in the location I have placed it. Instead it looks as if it's displayed in the same location it occupies when in design view.  And I believe I'm using version 2608 (not sure of the build).  I do have another laptop with MS Access's earlier version (2607).  I copied the database over to that laptop and ran the same report.  It worked fine there.

  • Yes. I spent the entire day reproducing and correcting the same behavior. I reverted MS 365 Apps for Business to version 2607, build 20228.20124, although I didn't try any other builds.
