A Modern, Customizable Visual Experience for Your Sites

The site header and footer are critical parts of the SharePoint user experience - enabling intuitive navigation, consistent branding, and cohesive site structure. To better align with modern design standards and evolving customer expectations, we’re excited to introduce a refreshed and more customizable visual experience for the SharePoint site header and footer.

This update empowers site owners to elevate their design with greater control over visuals and layout, while offering site viewers a cleaner, more immersive browsing experience.

Feature Highlights

For Site Owners:

  • Background Image Support: Set an image as the background of your header or footer and apply customizable overlay colors - now supported across all layout types.
Configure header background under ‘Change the Look’ Header Design Tab
  • Font Customization: Choose from a set of predefined font families to style your site title, navigation links, footer name, and footer links - allowing better alignment with your brand’s identity.
  • Flexible Footer Alignment: New support for left-aligned footers, giving you layout flexibility to suit different design needs.

For Site Viewers

The command bar is now hidden in view mode, providing a cleaner, more immersive experience for readers.

Will footers appear on mobile devices yet (using built in browser)?
Also, can the logo be set with a link? If so, how. Users are expecting logos to be clickable to navigate back to intranet home.

Hi TinaChen - will the site footer get the option to inherit across all sites in a hub (ie like the site header does) sometime soon? (We were hoping it might be part of this refresh/enhancement, but still missing) Thanks.

  • Under header, design I can upload an image file. It would be great to see the extended dialog here to choose from gallery, web and site.

      Hi Dennis,

Thank you for the ask! Yes, we do offer the image picker experience for the new Header & Footer image as background. You are able to select images from the Stock images, Web search, and Site:)

        Hello TinaChen

Thank you for your prompt response. I see the "Add an image" button, leading to the new image picker, when I design the Header on the website's homepage. Great work! I was on list view page (“/Forms/AllItems.aspx”), design, header showing an upload link (sorry for German screenshot). SharePoint is a hydra with thousands of heads 😊

  • That looks great! I can´t wait to put an image in the back of the header, like I've done it for the countdown web part. Are these improvements available for communication sites and team sites - or just for communication sites?
