I cannot add page numbers in Word (no x of y...)

Anyone that found the correct solution for this ?

I cannot add page numbers in Word (no x of y , no sjablones visible) , reinstallation , removing building blocks , nothing helps. And .... More on Office. com is greyed out ?

  • You can do it manually.  In the header or footer where you want the page numbering, Press CTRL+F9 and inside the { } that appear, type page so that you have

    { page }

    Then type the word of and then press CTRL+F9 again and this time inside the { }, type numpages so that you have

    { page } of { numpages }

    Finally, press ALT+F9 to toggle off the display of the field codes.

      Thank You Doug. I appreciate your help. However this is a workaround. Functions created by Microsoft do not work (and based on what I found on the internet it is a well known problem) I found indeed similar solution but it is like Microsoft  says : one cannot copy in Windows via the menu , just use Powershell and type it :-). Currently continuing in Latex for the projects I am doing.

      • Did you try deleting the Built-in Building Blocks.dotx template for your language version of Word? You will find it in a subfolder of %appdata%\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks. Subfolders are named by language code.

    I've seen this happen when Word's Building Blocks or Normal.dotm template becomes corrupted. Try creating a new blank document first to see if the issue is document-specific. If the Page X of Y templates are still missing, run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365, rename Normal.dotm, and reset the Building Blocks folder. As a workaround, you can also manually insert the fields { PAGE } and { NUMPAGES } in the footer to create Page X of Y numbering.
