I cannot add page numbers in Word (no x of y...)
You can do it manually. In the header or footer where you want the page numbering, Press CTRL+F9 and inside the { } that appear, type page so that you have
{ page }
Then type the word of and then press CTRL+F9 again and this time inside the { }, type numpages so that you have
{ page } of { numpages }
Finally, press ALT+F9 to toggle off the display of the field codes.

Thank You Doug. I appreciate your help. However this is a workaround. Functions created by Microsoft do not work (and based on what I found on the internet it is a well known problem) I found indeed similar solution but it is like Microsoft says : one cannot copy in Windows via the menu , just use Powershell and type it :-). Currently continuing in Latex for the projects I am doing.

Did you try deleting the Built-in Building Blocks.dotx template for your language version of Word? You will find it in a subfolder of %appdata%\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks. Subfolders are named by language code.
