Why Does Windows Sometimes Forget My Monitor Settings?
Windows sometimes seems to forget my monitor settings after restarting, waking from sleep, or switching between displays, and I notice that the resolution, refresh rate, scaling, or monitor arrangement may suddenly return to different values without me changing anything. The problem does not happen every time, but when it does, I have to manually configure everything again, which is becoming frustrating, so I am wondering whether a graphics driver, Windows update, display detection issue, cable connection, or another setting could be causing Windows to repeatedly lose my preferred monitor configuration.

The trigger matters here. If settings change only after sleep or reconnecting a display, Windows may be detecting the monitor as a new device rather than simply forgetting your preferences.
Try this order:
- Check the physical connection. Reseat the cable and, if possible, test another cable or a direct port instead of a dock or adapter. An unreliable connection can make the monitor’s EDID information disappear temporarily.
- Set the display again while all monitors are connected. Go to Settings > System > Display, select each monitor, set the recommended resolution and refresh rate, and arrange the displays. Choose Keep changes.
- Check the graphics driver. Install the driver recommended for your PC or GPU model. If the problem began immediately after an update, roll back that specific driver rather than repeatedly reinstalling random versions.
- If you use a dock, DisplayLink, monitor utility, or graphics-profile tool, test without it. These can reapply their own display layout after resume.
If the resolution and refresh rate change but the monitor names stay the same, suspect a driver or profile issue. If Windows shows a generic display or the monitor disappears and reappears, focus on the cable, dock, port, or monitor power.
Avoid registry “resolution lock” tweaks until you know whether the display is being detected correctly; they won’t fix an intermittent connection.
