Why does my laptop screen flicker only at 60% brightness?
My laptop screen exhibits persistent flickering specifically when the brightness is set to around 60 percent, but the issue disappears at higher or lower brightness levels. I have already updated my graphics drivers, but the problem persists, and I need guidance on what might be causing this unusual behavior.

This feature saves battery by keeping the screen image static. It's known to cause flicker when it activates or when the refresh rate changes, which can be tied to brightness settings on some systems.

Flickering that occurs only around one brightness level usually points to the laptop’s internal backlight control or a display power-saving feature, rather than a general graphics driver problem. Many laptop panels use PWM or different power levels to control brightness, and one particular range can become unstable because of the panel, firmware or power-management settings.
Try these checks in order:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Brightness. Turn off Change brightness based on content and automatic brightness if those options are available.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a fixed refresh rate instead of Dynamic Refresh Rate. Test both 60 Hz and the panel’s normal fixed rate.
- Check the graphics control application. Disable Display Power Savings in Intel Graphics Command Center or Vari-Bright in AMD Software if either option is present.
- Install the BIOS, chipset and graphics packages supplied specifically for the laptop model by its manufacturer. An updated generic graphics driver may not include the correct panel or power-management components.
- Restart the laptop and enter its BIOS/UEFI settings. If the brightness keys work there, set the screen to approximately the same level and check for flickering. Flickering outside Windows strongly suggests a panel, backlight or display-cable problem.
- Connect an external monitor. If the external monitor remains stable while only the laptop screen flickers, the GPU is probably working correctly and the fault is limited to the internal display system.
- If the issue also occurs in BIOS or continues after the power-saving features are disabled, contact the laptop manufacturer for a display hardware test.
Using 55% or 65% brightness is a safe temporary workaround. However, if the affected brightness range starts getting wider, arrange service because that can indicate a weakening backlight circuit or display panel.
