Who decided that restarting for updates should close all your unsaved work without warning?

My computer restarted to install updates and closed my open apps without giving me a clear warning, causing me to lose unsaved work. Is there a way to prevent automatic restarts, receive advance notice, or make the system save and restore my work before installing updates?

This appears to be a really hard one, just lost work from the same update you lost stuff from. It wasn't important stuff in my case, but it led me down the rabbit hole of seeing what microsoft and its users say about this.

Microsoft says "if you dont use apps from the 1980's and instead pay for a subscription to our apps then that wont happen, we refuse to let an update not apply because if you are even out of update for one day its a huge security risk" (highly doubt that, maybe if you are running national security.)

Users say "no one is stupid enough in 2026 to not be saving their work every time they stand up from the computer" (do people actually do that?)

In my learning i have found you can turn windows update off and set a date it turns back on, so i guess the answer is just to set it for the 1st of the month and have ANOTHER thing you have to tend to monthly to keep your life going smoothly.

I don't see why the notification to remind you to restart has to automatically apply after a week of putting it off, just keep reminding me, if a "hacker" (lol yeah right, its just scammers now days) gets into my computer that's my own fault for putting off the update.
