Which USB Port Is the One That Actually Works?
I'm having trouble figuring out which USB port on my computer is working because some connected devices aren't recognized or respond inconsistently. What steps can I take to test each port and determine whether the problem is caused by the port, the cable, the device, or a software setting?

Use one device you know works and test it in each USB port, keeping everything else the same. Plug it directly into the computer, without a hub or dock.
- It fails in only one port: test a second working device in that port. If both fail there but work elsewhere, the port is the likely problem.
- It fails in every port: try another cable, then test the device on another computer. For phones and drives, make sure the cable supports data—some cables only charge.
- It works directly but not through a hub: check the hub’s cable and power supply. External drives can disconnect if they aren’t getting enough power.
On Windows, keep Device Manager open while connecting the device. If an entry appears with a yellow warning, open Properties and note the error code. If a storage device appears there but not in File Explorer, check Disk Management—it may be missing a drive letter rather than having a bad USB connection.
Don’t format or initialise a drive containing files just because Windows suggests it. Start with the same-device, different-port test before changing drivers.
