Where does error code 0x800 come from, and why is it always different?

The "0x800" prefix you're seeing is actually the beginning of a longer hexadecimal error code, not a complete code on its own. The reason it looks different each time is that the digits after "0x800" change depending on which specific Windows component or program is reporting the failure, since that portion encodes the actual error number or facility code .
