What sorcery makes the touchpad freeze the moment I need to click?

My touchpad keeps freezing exactly when I'm about to click something, and I can't figure out what's causing it. Has anyone else run into this, and does anyone know what setting, driver, or background process could make the touchpad lock up right at the moment I need it?
