The Wallpaper Keeps Changing Back to the Previous Owner's Photos

My Windows wallpaper keeps reverting to photos that belonged to the previous owner of this computer, even after I change it to my own image. It seems like their account settings or synced theme are still active somewhere, so I need help stopping the old pictures from coming back.

This could be happening because Windows is syncing the old wallpaper through a previous Microsoft account or a theme setting. Try checking Settings > Personalization > Background and make sure the correct picture is selected. Also check Settings > Accounts for any old work or school account and disable wallpaper syncing temporarily to see if that fixes it. If it still keeps coming back, creating a new Windows user profile might help.

Check Settings > Accounts > Your info first. If it still shows the previous owner’s Microsoft account, changing the wallpaper won’t remove that account’s connection to the PC. Create your own Windows user under Accounts > Other users, sign into it, and set your background there. Back up your own files before removing the old user.

If you’re already using your own account:

    1. Open Settings > Personalisation > Background and select Picture, not Slideshow. Browse to your own image.
    2. Temporarily turn off theme syncing. On Windows 11, check Accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences > Personalisation. On Windows 10, check Accounts > Sync your settings > Theme.
    3. Set the wallpaper again and restart. If it still changes back, check Task Manager > Startup apps for a wallpaper changer or desktop-customisation app and disable that app.

The photos reappearing don’t necessarily mean the previous owner still has access; a local slideshow or background app can do this too. If the computer was handed over without being reset, a clean Windows installation after backing up your files is the more thorough way to remove their leftover accounts and software.
