How to turn off or disable locaton tracking service on Windows 11

I noticed that location services are enabled on my Windows 11 computer, and I would like to disable them because I do not want applications or other system features to access my device location. I am not sure which settings control this feature or whether turning it off could affect other important functions.

I want to completely stop location access while keeping my computer working normally, and I also want the setting to remain disabled after restarting my computer. Could someone explain how to turn off location tracking in Windows 11?

How to turn off location tracking in Windows 11? As a more advanced step to fully turn off location tracking in Windows 11, you can open the services.msc console (by pressing Win+R and typing it in), find these services, and change their Startup type to Disabled.

Here is the core policy and the critical information you need to know to disable location tracking service on Windows 11 using this method.

    The Key Policy: DisableLocation

    • You will need to target the ADMX_Sensors Policy CSP, specifically the DisableLocation policy . This setting is what turns off the location feature and prevents all programs from using location information.
    • The SyncML for this policy must target the following OMA-URI and format:
      OMA-URI (User Context): ./User/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/ADMX_Sensors/DisableLocation_1
    • Data Format: <Format>chr</Format> (this is a required format for ADMX-backed policies) .
    • Value: To disable location tracking, you set the policy to Enabled (<Data>1</Data>). This is a common point of confusion, as the policy name "Turn off location" is enabled to turn the feature off.

    Critical Errors to Avoid

    • Using the Wrong SyncML Format: ADMX-backed policies, like DisableLocation, require a specific <Format>chr</Format> tag in your SyncML. Omitting this or using the wrong format will cause the policy to fail .
    • Targeting the Wrong Context: The DisableLocation_1 policy is applied in the User context (./User/Vendor/...). If you need to apply this to a device context, the correct CSP is DisableLocation_2 for the device, but you must verify the exact path in the documentation .
    • Misunderstanding the "Enabled" State: As mentioned, to effectively disable location tracking service on Windows 11, you must set the policy to Enabled. Setting it to Disabled or not configuring it will allow the location feature to remain active.
    • Trying This Without an MDM Service: The standard SyncML approach requires an MDM server like Microsoft Intune to push the policy. You cannot simply copy the SyncML into a local tool and expect it to work for a device not enrolled in an MDM.

Hello. Group Policy is one of the most effective, completely free methods to turn off location tracking in Windows 11. It's a built-in tool for Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions that allows you to enforce a system-wide setting, which users typically cannot override through the Settings app . Understanding how to turn off location tracking in Windows 11 through Group Policy involves a few specific steps and avoiding some common errors.

Setting up the Group Policy policy is straightforward:

    1. Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor .
    2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Location and Sensors .
    3. Find and double-click the policy named "Turn off location" .
    4. To disable location tracking, set the policy to Enabled. A policy set to "Enabled" turns off the location feature, preventing all programs from accessing location information .
    5. Click Apply and then OK.

Remember that setting the policy to "Enabled" is what disables location services. This is a common point of confusion, after configuring the policy, the change may not be immediate. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as an administrator and run the command gpupdate /force to apply the policy without restarting. The Group Policy setting directly modifies a registry key (DisableLocation). If you have previously changed this key manually, it might conflict with or be overwritten by the GPO . It's best to use one method consistently.

By following this approach, you have a clear and authoritative method for how to turn off location tracking in Windows 11, effectively disabling the feature for your entire system and preventing users from toggling it back on.

  • If you’re looking for a How to turn off location tracking in Windows 11 and are using the Home edition, which doesn’t support Group Policy, editing the Registry is an effective solution.

This method restricts location permissions by directly modifying the system’s Capability Access Manager, making it the most effective tool for users who want to understand How to turn off location tracking in Windows 11 at a deeper system level.

    Steps:

    1. Press the Windows key + R, then type:

    regedit

    2. Press Enter to navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\location

    • Find the key named Value, double-click it, and set the value to Deny.
    • Click OK to close the Registry Editor, then restart your computer to apply the changes.

Ultimately, the Registry Editor is an ideal, powerful, and native tool for addressing privacy and location tracking issues. Although it isn’t as user-friendly as the standard Settings menu.

However, as an essential system utility, it’s still a great tool that helps users enjoy a more private Windows experience without having to rely on third-party blocking software.
