KB5034441 fails to install with error code 0x80070643.
Feedback from a long time patcher here:
The manner in which this particular update has been handled has been poor in my opinion. The update is only being pushed out to Windows update or Windows update for business and is not on the Microsoft catalog nor WSUS. So this update has been pushed to machines that I would call "lightly" managed or "unmanaged". Some of these impacted machines have no TPM chip nor do they have bitlocker installed so the need for this update is nil.
The communication thus far has been to instruct us to manually attempt to resize partitions which are not easy to do for anyone, and particularly not for a lot of machines. There are few tools that I can see that let us know if we're going to hit this issue other than to attempt to install and see if it fails. The PowerShell script is not something I'd have my 95 Dad want to do to his machine, let alone me wanting to do it to a bunch of machines at the office.
We're now at Friday, right before patching weekend and may I request a lot more communication and perhaps someone going back and adding in detection into the patch to at least not attempt to install on machines that have no tpm chip and do not have bitlocker installed. These machines are not at risk.
What you are asking your Microsoft patchers to do with this update is not acceptable and not attainable by your Windows 10 patching audience.

It seems that Microsoft has fixed this bug with this update below:

At the moment NO SOLUTION WORKS with a Win10 PC in 'S' Mode.
I have a laptop I want to keep in 'S' mode. ( Running cmd.exe requires dropping out of 'S' mode.
I'd appreciate guidance

How really i need to do ?
- debv719Copper ContributorI have been trying ti install KB5034441 everyday for months! I get the error message )X80070643 everyday. I have checked this forum and there does not seem to be a coherent answer. My Recovery Partition shows 508 MB and says healthy. I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't either fix this or stop sending it to me as an update every day. I am 77 years old and only moderately tech savvy - but the answers on the forum are for problems I don't have with partitions. I would appreciate any help or suggestions - this is very discouraging and poor customer service from Microsoft. Thank you
- w9smithCopper ContributorHi
Have you tried
Open CMD in administrator mode
reagentc / disable
wait 30 seconds
reagentc / enable
This is what made the update install for me.
- NotTechSavyCopper ContributorI have tried numerous times to attempt this partition recovery patch with no success. In .cmd and using administrator privilege I am locked out from shrinking and resizing this partition to increase it by 30% which is what I need for the file extensions for 2024-01 to install. Right now my partition size is 509MB, what I need is 750MB minimum to install this patch. cmd prompt states "OEM" resizing prohibited end user. I am sure I am not the only one getting this message as roughly 50% of windows 10 users used a OEM image disk to install windows 10. My version is the retired version 1909 that was succesfully updated to 22H2, but wont install 2024-01. In version 1909 there is an administrator lockout for administrators only for "Microsoft Privelege" to shrink and resize the recovery partition to the appropriate size needed for this install. Its a locked feature that at any time microsoft can unlock in a newer update and choses not to. Because I do much online gaming with XBOX Game Pass its created a vulnerability and my computer has been hacked twice with my file folders deleted from the SSD. Microsoft is doing this in an attempt to create obsolescence and get people tyo make teh switch to windows 11 when there is absolutely no need for win 11 and any computer predating 12th gen intel doesn't work well with win 11.

i have 546mb recovery partition and it failed and with the same error code 0x80070643 for kb5034441

SusanBradleyGeek I had the same issue. I hope the solution I stumbled upon helps others.
When updating windows KB5034441 I would get error 800070643 with no installation.
Thing I have tried, the did not solve the issue.
- increased recovery partition to 1.93MB (in stages)
- windows troubleshooter - updates
- restart computer
- SFC /scannow
- DISM.EXE /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Nothing worked!SOLUTION
note: Recovery partition must be immediatly after C: partition
Make recovery partition 1GB by:
use DISK MANAGEMENT to shrink C:
Use GPARTED boot to expand Recovery partition into space created by shrinking C:
note: Disk Managment is must faster at shrinking that GPARTED
Open CMD in administrator mode
reagentc / disable
reagentc / enable
Try the update again. HAZZA! Update installed.
I hope this helps someone in the future. - DOK33Copper Contributor
SusanBradleyGeek Hi, this tutorial helped me 🙂: https://youtu.be/2mw6IA9Wfis
- vinaisharmaCopper ContributorActually what is missing in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf
if no recovery partition is there, then need to create one and if no winre path displayed by reagentc then need to assign one by creating a new winre.wim from source( ISO) and lastly deleting the software distribution folder from windows directory before resuming update

- shanen0Copper ContributorMy feedback on this topic:
Microsoft's obvious objective is to destroy old computers. I understand the problem as MS sees it. My computer isn't broken, but you insist on fixing it anyway. Until you break it or set it up for some cyber-criminal to break it for you. And no matter how EVIL you get, there is nothing I can do about it. I hope to gawd I have purchased my last MS machine last year--but you have also destroyed my freedom to pick other options. Just too fricking bad I like freedom, eh? Just when I think I don't have to hate you so much...- PRSGroupITCopper Contributor
shanen0 I'm sure the "you" you're referring to is Microsoft and not Susan Bradley. Susan is a long-time member of the IT community whose invaluable contributions have benefitted IT professionals everywhere. Susan isn't a Microsoft employee, yet she donates countless hours helping others to navigate the complexities of managing Microsoft products and services in an enterprise and small business environment. A true MVP.
We all understand your frustration, Susan included.

PRSGroupITNo, she seemed to make it fairly clear that she was speaking on behalf of someone else who apparently didn't want to be clearly identified.
