Does SMS Backup and Restore have a PC version for viewing text messages?

Just backed up a few years of text messages from my Android phone using SMS Backup & Restore. The backup was saved as an XML file, and now I'd like to open and read those messages on my Windows 10 PC.

The problem is that opening the XML file directly just shows a bunch of code, which is pretty hard to read. Look for SMS Backup and Restore for PC that could display the messages like normal conversations, with contact names, dates, and timestamps.

Does anyone know if there's an official Windows version or a decent alternative for viewing these backups? Ideally, something that can also export the messages to PDF or another readable format.

Any suggestions?

DroidGeeker is a workable solution, though it reads messages directly from your phone via USB rather than opening the XML file itself.

For a SMS Backup and Restore for PC experience that shows conversations with contact names and timestamps, here's the plan:

    1. Connect your Android phone to the Windows 10 PC.

    2. Enable USB debugging.

    3. Let DroidGeeker recognize the device.

    4. Select the messages you want.

    5. Export them as readable HTML or text files.

This skips the raw XML code entirely and gives you a clean, conversation-style view—a practical SMS Backup and Restore for PC alternative if you don't mind the paid license.

SMS-BnR-Tools is a Windows tool built to read and display XML backups from the Android app SMS Backup & Restore. It groups messages by contact in a data grid, so you see conversations with names, dates, and timestamps instead of raw code.

    How to Use It:

    1. Download the tool: Get the executable from the binary folder on the project's GitHub page—no installation needed.

    2. Open your backup: Launch the tool and load your sms-*.xml file.

    3. View conversations: Messages appear grouped by contact; select any contact to read the thread.

For a command-line approach, place the executable in a folder and run:

    SMSBnRTools.exe "C:\path\to\your\sms-backup.xml"

This generates individual XML files per contact, which you can open in a browser or spreadsheet.

A Note on "SMS Backup and Restore for PC free download"

The official app is Android-only. What you find labeled as "SMS Backup and Restore for PC free download" are usually Android emulators running the mobile app on Windows—they won't give you a clean, native way to read your XML file. For simply viewing backed-up messages on a PC, SMS-BnR-Tools is the more direct solution.

The frustrating part is having your backup ready, but raw XML makes years of messages impossible to read comfortably. To get the most out of your SMS Backup and Restore for PC Windows 10 workflow, you need a proper viewer. SMS Backup Viewer (SBV) solves this by importing the file and presenting your messages in a texting-app-style interface instead of raw code.

Setting up SMS Backup and Restore for PC Windows 10:

    1. Run the latest stable version via Docker and keep the data folder available to store messages locally.
    2. Open the web interface, create your login, and upload the XML file produced by SMS Backup & Restore.
    3. Once imported, browse conversations normally, filter contacts, search text, and view supported MMS attachments directly.

Bottom line: This tool turns an unreadable XML archive into a familiar chat interface, making it much easier to browse and search your old conversations.

  • Scanning through raw XML code just to read old texts is frustrating, especially when the backup itself is perfectly fine. SMS Viewer and Exporter solves this by reading the XML files created by SMS Backup & Restore and rebuilding them into normal, readable conversations on your Windows PC. For an SMS Backup and Restore for PC free solution, this is a practical way to browse contacts, timestamps, and older messages without restoring everything back to your phone.

    Standout Features:

    • Conversation view | • Contact filtering

    • Message search | • Dates and timestamps

    • PDF export | • CSV and JSON export

How to use SMS Backup and Restore for PC free:

Step 1: Download the latest release ZIP from GitHub and extract the folder on your Windows 10 PC.

Step 2: Double-click index.html to open the viewer in a modern browser. No installation is required.

Step 3: Select the phone's country from the backup, then drag your XML file into the viewer.

Step 4: Open a contact to read the conversation, search for older texts, or export the chat as a PDF.

Because the XML backup is processed locally in your browser, your data is never uploaded to an online converter. Just note that for massive backups, running it through a local server is more reliable, and PDF export is capped at 5,000 messages per conversation.

You might want to try SMS Viewer and Exporter, since you already have an XML backup file. If you're looking for SMS Backup and Restore for PC free download, this tool can read XML backup files created by SMS Backup & Restore and display the messages in a much more readable format.

How to SMS Backup and Restore for PC free download:

    Method 1: Open Directly

    1. This is the simplest method and requires no installation.
    2. Download the latest ZIP file from GitHub and extract the entire folder.
    3. Open index.html using a modern browser.
    4. Select the default country/region used by your phone when the backup was created.
    5. Select or drag and drop your SMS Backup & Restore XML file into the viewer.
    6. Open a contact to read messages just as you would in a regular conversation.

You can search the backup content and export conversations to PDF format; CSV and JSON formats are also supported.

    Method 2: Run via localhost

    1. If the backup file is very large, or if opening index.html directly causes browser-related issues, you can instead start a local server. Open a terminal in the extracted folder and run:

    python3 -m http.server 8000 --bind 127.0.0.1

    2. Then open the following URL in your browser:

    http://127.0.0.1:8000

This way, the application and messages remain stored on your own computer; the backup is not uploaded to a remote server. Running the application via localhost also provides more reliable storage and handles very large CSV or JSON export files more effectively.
