O365 SharePoint images disappeared

I have had an O365 SharePoint site for several years that I use to help manage the affairs of a small group to which I belong. Today I discovered that the home page is no longer displaying any of the images that it has always displayed. I checked and it's not just me seeing this - one of the group members says it has been like this for some time (which I assume means a few weeks, as it isn't all that long since I was last on the site and it was working then).

The history shows that the home page has not changed in years. The images are still in the SiteAssets library. They are supposedly displayed via a Hero Web part in tiled mode. Its components still have the correct URLs for the images, but what is actually being displayed is the "Background image" (see screenshot below).

The only explanation that I can think of is that Microsoft has released a change to O365 SharePoint that has broken this functionality.

Has anyone else noticed such behaviour, or does anyone have any insight into what is happening?

  • Hi Michael Brooks

i had the same issue and readed anything about when an image URL are over 100 characters, they will be broken. To fix it i have shortener the images url and add the images new, after them the images appears.

    Regards, Dave

      Thanks for the insights David,
Encountered this today and was resolved by shortening the uploaded file name.

      Cheers, Jacob
  • Update: I edited the Hero part and in each segment I clicked the Change button and simply re-entered the existing URL, and that fixed the issue for now at least - given that the images disappeared before, I would not be surprised if they were to suddenly disappear again.
