Modern team site - How to create modern ROOT and SUB site

I am able to create Modern team sites from the "Sharepoint Tile" and "+ new site" option. So far so good.

Now I want to create a new site collection (//blabla/sites/newcollection) and the Root site of this site collection be a modern team site. As well I have one modern site and when I create a subsite I want this as well to be a modern site.

Somehow I can't get this working.

Edit: When I create a site from the "+ new site" option the (modern) site gets this URL //blabla/sites/newsite.

So when I look to this url it looks like a site collection. However when I check my site collections in the SharePoint admin the //blabla/sites/newsite site collection does not exist.

I am confused....

  • My 2 cents here:
    (1) A modern team site is behind the scenes a site collection so the idea of creating a subsite as a modern team site is not correct. First you create the modern team site and then you can create as many subistes, lists and libraries as you want in the modern team site.
    (2) As far as I understand, current rollout (not finished yet) will allow you to create modern team sites from the SharePoint landing page. In the future, I expect we will be able to create also modern team sites from the SPO Admin Center.
    (3) Modern Team Sites are being released to First Release, what means we can consider they are still in preview so that's could be the reason why you are not seeing the site in the SPO Admin Center. I'm pretty sure that currently they are still being created as hidden site collections (As happens when you create an Office 365 Group and you provision the Group site)

For updating the topic and info for new visitors!

Now creating modern team sites as a sub site is possible.

Keep the old structure meanwhile you are enjoying new modern sites features ;)

    Cheers!

  • This new feature has not arrived to my tenants, so I cannot speak for sure, but probably you have created a (modern) team site connected to a Group: this could explain why it does not appear in the SharePoint admin center...

jcgonzalezmartin, This has been the single most helpful sentence for getting my brain to finally 'click' in regagds to this distinction and behaviour :   A modern team site is behind the scenes a site collection so the idea of creating a subsite as a modern team site is not correct.

      THANKS

Sadly, it's wrong. A modern team site is a subsite of the root site collection.

jcgonzalezmartin Thanks, this clears things up.

Makes me think about the way we create Intranets these days and if that is still the way to go.

I will open a new topic to share my thoughts on that.
