We have a SharePoint 2016 farm with IRM encrypted documents that we want to migrate to SharePoint Online.
Questions:
- What is the best approach to migrate these documents from SharePoint 2016 to SharePoint Online?
- Do we have to remove the IRM protection before migration from SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint Online and then re-enable IRM on both source and target document libraries (SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint Online) or can the documents be migrated directly?
- What is the recommended way of enabling IRM in the SharePoint Online target document libraries? Directly in the library or using Office 365 Unified Labeling and applying sensitivity labels to the documents?
- In SharePoint Online, can documents that are encrypted using IRM (either directly in the library or using Office 365 sensitivity labels) be opened in the browser (Word Online, Visio Online, etc) or can they only be opened in the Office client application?
