Hide Pencil Icon for Read-Only Users?
In SharePoint, I created a Read-Only List. But when a user clicks to view an item in full, for some reason, they are still seeing the pencil icon for columns/fields that have "Multiple lines of text." It gives them the impression that they can edit, but then when they Save, they get the "Sorry, you don't have access." error. Is it possible to hide that pencil icon to clean up the interface? Thank you for your help!

I just encountered the same problem when using the multiple lines of text column. It shows the pencil icon even though it set to read only for everyone except Owners. When clicking the pencil it allows the user to type in the box but when they hit the "Save" button their screen freezes/locks up and they have to restart Teams. The pencil icon should not even be there for "Read only" users.
Is there any solution or workaround for this? Looks like a Microsoft / SharePoint bug.
