Difference between Modern Pages and News Page (technical)

Can someone point out the technical difference between a modern page and a news page?

I get the terminology, but now how they are different. They both appear to be the same content type, yet only when I use the "add news" link (either online or now mobile) the news page will be listed under news.

When I create a simple modern page, this page is not "published" as news and therefore does not appear in that News web part.

I don't think there is much of difference really, it's just an easy ready-made way to promote content and make it more visible.  More specifically, though, from this thread, 'news' has more properties and is part of the site pages library:

"You are right that news are essentially modern pages with some additional properties and they are stored in the site pages library. That being said, you can only create news from entry points on the news web part. If you haven't added news web part to any page and haven't used group homepage you shouldn't be able to create news."
