Counting hours in calendar by category

I need to count time spent in a date range by category.  I can do an advanced search and get a list but I need to total up the hours.  We need to do it every month across dozens of categories and date ranges so I am looking for easy execution or automation. Does anyone have any ideas?

How did it go? I am looking for a solution like this right now. What has worked well, and what would you recommend? Thanks!

I gave VBOffice a try. It worked well if I did it for my own calendar, but not so well if I wanted to use it to grab information from another person's calendar I am a delegate for. It doesn't look like they have help channels available anymore unfortunately.
