Retention Policies and Hybrid Migration

We are currently migrating from Exchange 2007 to Office 365 and have a couple of questions on retention policies.

We currently have our Exchange 2007 setup with a retention policy that retains emails forever even when permanently deleted from the mailbox by the user.

1. Will the permanently deleted, retained emails be migrated to office 365 during the mailbox migration?

2. Considering we have a similar policy setup on the Office 365 exchange server, will the permanently deleted emails in Office 365 be cached in Outlook 2016 when Outlook is caching the mailbox?

Thanks,

Steve

  • 1) Yes, the content of the RecoverableItems subtree is also migrated

    2) No, it's not cached in the mailbox

As ExO has different retention policies, make sure you've migrated/set them up correctly so there are no surprises after the migration. One of the biggest differences is the way ExO handles (soft) deleted messages - there is no retention tag applied to Deleted Items.
