Teams chat retention policy vs. user accessible chat history

If we set a Teams chat retention policy for 7 years in Security and Compliance Center, does that mean users can scroll back through 7 years of history in their chats?  If what users can access is limited to a time range, is that limit documented and configurable?

Nice you found the answer, but I doubt the answer is split tunneling :)
