I have now replaced the display port connection with USB-C, no crashes. It looks like this was indeed the solution. It could be a faulty/old DP cable, of course. So if this happens to someone else, replace whatever cable you're using to connect the display with a new one. It's possible DP isn't the problem, but my cable was.
