Vertical scroll bar not working on word and excel

I have just bought a brand new HP Pavilion laptop. Our IT person at work installed Microsoft office. All is fine, except that the vertical scroll bar in word and excel does not work.  It's fine in File Explorer, in dialog boxes, in browsers.  

Any suggestions? It's actually really tricky working without it!

I should add that I can do a 2 finger scroll using the touchpad.  Perhaps this is all that is now offered by Microsoft?  (And I have ticked the boxes for vertical scrolling in advanced options /word/excel)  @DelaFoster
