Struggling to add a Timeline in Excel Workbook

Copper Contributor

The timeline disappeared whilst updating my workbook. For some reason, I can't add a timeline again. Shows no connections in the workbook. I lost train of thought on how to fix the problem

If your timeline disappeared in Excel and you are unable to re-add it, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Pivot Table Connections

  • Timelines in Excel are tied to PivotTables or PivotCharts. If the timeline disappeared, it's possible that the PivotTable it was connected to was deleted or became disconnected.
  • Check if the PivotTable still exists:
    • Go to the worksheet where your PivotTable was located.
    • Ensure the PivotTable is still present and functioning.
  • If the PivotTable was deleted:
    • You will need to recreate the PivotTable first before you can add a timeline.

2. Recreate the Pivot Table (If Needed)

  • If your PivotTable was accidentally deleted or corrupted, recreate it:
    • Go to the Insert tab on the Ribbon.
    • Select PivotTable and create it using your data source.
  • Make sure the PivotTable has a date field, as timelines are based on date fields.

3. Add the Timeline

  • Once the PivotTable is set up correctly:
    • The PivotTable doesn’t have a date field.
    • The workbook doesn’t recognize any active PivotTables.
    • Click anywhere in the PivotTable.
    • Go to the Analyze tab (under PivotTable Tools).
    • Click Insert Timeline.
    • If the timeline option is grayed out or doesn't show any connections, this could mean that:

4. Check Data Connections

  • Sometimes, Excel loses connections to the data source, which might prevent you from adding a timeline:
    • Click Add to reconnect your data source or refresh your existing connections.
    • Go to the Data tab.
    • Click Connections to see if there are any active connections.
    • If no connections are listed, you may need to reconnect your data source:

5. Recreate the Timeline

  • If you can see the connections but still can't add a timeline:
    • Try removing the existing timeline (if it's still there in any form) by selecting it and pressing Delete.
    • Recreate the timeline by selecting the PivotTable and going to Analyze > Insert Timeline.

6. Check Compatibility Mode

  • Ensure your workbook is not in compatibility mode, as some features (like timelines) may be disabled:
    • Go to File > Info.
    • If you see "Compatibility Mode," convert the workbook to the latest Excel format by clicking Convert.

7. Check for Corruption

  • If your workbook or specific sheet seems to be acting up, there might be corruption:
    • Try copying your data and PivotTable to a new workbook and see if the problem persists.
    • If everything works in the new workbook, it might confirm an issue with the original file.

8. Excel Update

  • Ensure that your Excel version is up-to-date:
    • Go to File > Account and check for updates.
    • Sometimes, an update can fix bugs or issues with features like timelines.

9. Recreate the Workbook

  • As a last resort, if you suspect the workbook is corrupt or buggy, consider recreating the workbook in a fresh file:
    • Copy your data and PivotTables to a new workbook.
    • Recreate the timeline in the new workbook.
