Removing a drop down list of functions

Copper Contributor

Does anyone know how to remove a drop-down list showing functions on a cell. The data validation command menu shows grayed out on this cell only. It does not look like a drop-down list from a list.

In Excel 365, if you have a drop-down list showing functions in a cell, it's likely due to the "Formula AutoComplete" feature. This feature provides suggestions for functions and formulas as you type in a cell. If you want to remove this drop-down list, you can disable the Formula AutoComplete feature. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Open Excel and go to the worksheet where you want to remove the function suggestions.
  2. Click on the "File" tab in the ribbon to open the Backstage view.
  3. Select "Options" at the bottom of the navigation pane. This will open the Excel Options dialog box.
  4. In the Excel Options dialog box, go to the "Advanced" category on the left.
  5. Scroll down to the "Editing options" section.
  6. Uncheck the box next to "Enable AutoComplete for cell values."
  7. Click the "OK" button to apply the changes.

Now, the drop-down list showing function suggestions should be disabled for the selected cell, and you will not see the grayed-out data validation command menu.

Please note that disabling this feature will prevent Excel from suggesting functions as you type, so you will need to manually enter functions and formulas. If you ever want to re-enable the Formula AutoComplete feature, you can follow the same steps and check the "Enable AutoComplete for cell values" box in the Excel Options dialog box. The text and steps were created with the help of AI.
