Merged Cells Not Editable in Excel Web Version After Desktop Protection Setup

Copper Contributor

Hello everyone,

I’m encountering an issue with Excel that I hope someone can help with. We have documents with protected cells where certain sections are intentionally made editable for the staff. The Admin, who is the only one with access to the full Excel desktop application, sets up these protections.

When the staff access the same document through the web version of Excel (which is the only version they have access to), the editable sections within merged cells are not saved or accessible. This issue seems to occur exclusively with merged cells. Individual cells that are made editable work fine on both the desktop and web versions when tested, but the staff only use the web version and encounter this problem with merged cells not being editable when they are in the document.

I’ve shown the Admin how to manually adjust the permissions on the web version to match the desktop application, but it’s not an ideal solution given the extra steps involved. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a known bug, or is there a workaround to ensure merged cells' editability is preserved on the web version?

Thanks in advance for any advice or solutions!

Try unmerging the cells, then setting the same editing permission to all previously merged cells and then merging them again. (or avoid merged cells)
