Insert table function gray-ed out

I am trying to complete my homework and I am going off my textbook instructions and it specifically asks ""With cell A1 selected, click the Insert tab, click the Table button in the table group, in the Create Table dialogue box verify that your table data is in the range of $A$1:$H$4, make sure My Table has headers is checked as shown in..." but either it is greyed out or if I click outside of the cells I get an error of "a table can not be added on-top pf another table.

This is driving me crazy considering I am taking a CIS105 class and the textbook "should" be error free. Any help much appreciated. Below are snips of the issues. The greyed out table buttonThe error

The area is a already a table.  You can tell because when you select A1, you see the table design tab show up in the ribbon.

To remove the table, select it again, and in the table design tab, select "Convert to Range".  This removes the table.  Then you can follow the directions, insert table...

      Hope this helps.
