If statement using cell color

Hi all

I am a teacher and have a spreadsheet with topics Red, amber and greened based on assessment marks.

I would like to use an IF statement based on the cell color, however I am using conditional formatting to set the cell colour.

The tutorials I have found will work on cell colours set using the paint fill formatting, however it will not work when set using conditional formatting.

Any ideas?
