I'm so blasted mad!! Why can't I save my own documents that I create and update??

Select File > Options > Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings..., then select File Block Settings.

Make sure that neither the Open not the Save check box is ticked for any of the Excel 2007 and later file types:

A ticked check box would mean that you cannot open or save that file type.
