Grouping Data
Hello. I have grouped some rows together, consisting of a top row, with a number of sub rows. The top row is the sum of the sub-rows. At present the icon to expand /close the sub rows is at the bottom. Is there anyway to have this icon at the top row?
Many thanks

Take this for moving the Grouping Icon to the Top Row
1. Select the grouped rows.
2. Go to the Data tab on the Ribbon.
3. Click the small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Outline group to open the Settings dialog.
4. In the Settings window, uncheck "Summary rows below detail".
5. Click OK.- OlufemiOBrass Contributor
HelloAlex Hammerstein,
Yes, you can control where the expand/collapse icon appears when grouping rows in Excel.
To have the icon appear on the top summary row, make sure to group only the sub-rows, not the summary row itself.
✅ How to Do It
- Select the sub-rows (e.g., rows 2–4).
- Go to Data > Group.
- The expand/collapse icon will appear next to the row above your selection—right next to the summary row.

Amount
Apples

Bananas

Oranges

Total Fruit
45
To group the fruit items with the icon on row 4 (Total Fruit):
- Select rows 1 to 3 (Apples to Oranges).
- Click Group.
- The icon will appear next to row 4, allowing you to collapse the sub-rows beneath it.
This works in Excel 365, 2016, and 2019.
