Frozen spreadsheet

Copper Contributor

Attempting to enter new data the cell quickly moves to the left, not accepting new data. If I try to enter a correction on old data it erases the original from the spreadsheet

It sounds like your Excel spreadsheet might be locked or protected, causing issues with data entry. To address this:

  1. Check for Protection:
    • Look for a message saying the sheet is protected. Try right-clicking on the tab and selecting "Unprotect Sheet" (if available) to remove any protection.
  2. Check for Frozen Panes:
    • If the view seems locked, go to the "View" tab and check if there are frozen panes. Click "Unfreeze Panes" to release any locked views.
  3. Disable Filter or Sort:
    • Sometimes, active filters or sorting options can prevent editing. Ensure that there are no active filters or sorting enabled.
  4. Disable Scroll Lock:
    • In some cases, the Scroll Lock key on your keyboard can cause this behavior. Press the Scroll Lock key to disable it.
  5. Disable Read-Only Mode:
    • If the file is read-only, it won't allow changes. Save a copy of the file to a new location or remove the read-only setting from the file properties.
  6. Cell Format or Data Validation:
    • Verify if the cell has a particular format or data validation rule that might restrict entry. Adjust the cell format or validation rules if needed.

By checking these aspects, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue that's causing the spreadsheet to prevent data entry or edits. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
