Freeze panes in shared document do constantly move

Copper Contributor

At work we have a shared Excel document with 'Freeze panes'. Unfortunatly the place of the rows/columns that should be frozen are constantly moving.

Even if I just have the document open, but don't do anything in the document, the freeze panes suddenly change to strange places. This also happens if I have chosen to have a temporarily private view. The sheet is protected (only some cells may be changed), but the panes can not be protected. It is very anoying the panes are contantly moving. BTW we use Filters in the sheet.

We have Microsoft 365 (version 2311, build 17029.20140)

Hope someone knows how to solve this.

It sounds like you are experiencing an issue with freeze panes constantly moving in your shared Excel document, even when you are not actively making changes to the document. There could be a few reasons why this is happening, and here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Check for Automatic Calculation: Sometimes, Excel recalculates formulas or adjusts layout settings automatically, which can cause the freeze panes to move. Make sure that automatic calculation is turned off. You can do this by going to the "Formulas" tab in the ribbon, clicking on "Calculation Options", and selecting "Manual".
  2. Review Shared Workbook Settings: If the Excel document is shared among multiple users, there might be conflicts or synchronization issues that are causing the freeze panes to move. Review the shared workbook settings by going to the "Review" tab in the ribbon and clicking on "Share Workbook". Check if any options might be contributing to the issue.
  3. Remove Filters Before Adjusting Freeze Panes: Filters can sometimes interfere with freeze panes settings. Try removing filters before adjusting freeze panes, and then reapply them afterward.
  4. Test in Different Environments: Try opening the shared Excel document in different environments (e.g., different computers, different versions of Excel, or in the web version of Excel) to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to one environment or more widespread.
  5. Update Microsoft 365: Ensure that you have the latest updates installed for Microsoft 365. Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved by updating to the latest version, as updates often include bug fixes and improvements.
  6. Consider VBA Solutions: If the issue persists and you're comfortable with VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), you could consider creating a VBA macro to automatically set the freeze panes to your desired location. This could provide a workaround for the problem.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with freeze panes constantly moving in your shared Excel document. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
