Excel changed format; need to return to Compatibility Mode

My Office 365 Excel just reformatted an important file which was running in Compatibility Mode and lost all of the formatting. How do I return to the original formatting. When I try to retrieve earlier versions, I get a message that its format isn't compatible. Help!!!!
