Excel Calculation Error?

Copper Contributor

Quite simply have just come across a "problem" that I am unable to explain.

Entering the formula "101559956668416 * 18" into a cell displays an incorrect result as 1828079220031490.

I am wondering if there is any insight that anyone can offer to explain this apparent error.

I have an example workbook that illustrates this and have incorporated 2 columns of data that make use of addition and multiplication to increment the large base number in the equation by itself. Both sets of data (addition and multiplication) demonstrate the same anomaly. Haven't worked out how to attach that workbook to this post, so am just going to post with the hope that explanation may prompt some feedback.

Technical details: Installed RAM: 8Gb (7.77 Gb usable), System Type: 64-bit operating system, x-64 based processor, Windows 10 Pro, Version 20H2, OS Build 19042-1415, Office 2019 not 365.
