Excel 365 file with data connections is slow when opened in Sharepoint Online

Hi,

I'm experiencing a strange phenomenon.

Excel 365 files with data connections stored in Sharepoint online document libraries are slow when opened in Sharepoint Online (in desktop app- NOT EXCEL ONLINE).

However, when the file is downloaded and opened on the desktop it is very quick.

Why would this be happening?
