disappearing text

Hello all:  I am writing about Excel for Mac ver 16.32 on my 2016 MBP running Catalina OS.

I have created a spreadsheet in October and when attempting to change the text orientation for a row to a 45 degree angle the text in the cell disappears.  The text entered in the cell appears in the formula bar but the actual cell on the spreadsheet is empty.  If the text remains horizontal it again appears in the cell box.

 What is also odd is if I select vertical text the cell contents appear in the cell but if any other orientation other than horizontal is selected the cell contents disappear.   This happens to the spreadsheet I created a month go and well as when I create new spreadsheets.  I have done this in the past with no problem and am not sure what I did or changed in Excel.
