Conditional Formatting Question

I'm having a lot of trouble with creating a rule that appears to be simple. I have a row of sequential numbers in row 5 and months (starting in 2023) in row 7. In J1, I have MONTH(TODAY())+12. Using this, March displays as 15. I've successfully made a rule that turns the current month in row 7 green.

In D1, I have =J1-6, which returns 9. I'm trying to write a formatting rule that says any column below the number in D1 should be filled in with grey, and conversely one that turns anything greater than the current month (J1) as a light grey.

However each time I try I get either nothing grey or everything grey.
