Columns not expanding automatically with long text strings

I am using one column in my spreadsheet to put a url (hyperlink, I guess).   At first the links in the column would expand across to the right.  Now when I copy a paste a link it either a) doesn't expand across other columns and just makes one long url expanding downward or b) doesn't expand across columns and isn't even a blue hyperlink.
