Adding Header and Footer to Excel

Copper Contributor

I am trying to insert a header and footer to a spreadsheet I am working on for a college class. However, when I go to the insert tab, there is no header and footer option for me click on. Is there another way that I can add them?

You can only do that in the desktop version of Excel for Windows and Mac, not in the online (browser) version.

How can I be sure what version I have? I have Microsoft 365 downloaded to my Windows computer and just access all of my documents through it.

Do you access Excel in your internet browser, or by starting a stand-alone application?

I started it by using the Excel downloaded on my computer. I attached a screenshot of my screen for refernece if that is more helpful.

If you look closely at the screenshot, you'll see that you are running Excel in the Edge internet browser: the Edge icon is highlighted in the taskbar, and there is no Excel icon in the taskbar.

Try the following: click the Editing drop down on the right hand side of the ribbon.

Select 'Open in desktop app'.

For comparison:

This is the Excel icon in my taskbar:

Can you find this Excel icon in Start > All apps? What happens if you click that?
