Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

We are excited to tell you that we are updating how forms in SharePoint modern lists and libraries are displayed, and you will also soon be able to create custom forms using Microsoft PowerApps for SharePoint lists.

We used to navigate to a new page whenever the new, edit or view form was displayed for a modern list. We are moving these forms into a panel that appears on the right hand side of the page (left hand side for right to left languages). This change makes for a much quicker experience for adding new items, as well as viewing and changing existing items in your list. You can still get a link to an item (or the new item form) by using the "Copy link" button that's been added to the panel.

Built-in Forms Panel.pngForms Panel for Modern Lists

The updates to panels will be coming to all of the First Release users and tenants within the next two weeks.

We are also very happy to announce that the ability to customize forms for modern lists using PowerApps will be coming to our First Release tenants. This capability was announced at Ignite 2017 and was mentioned in an earlier blog post around reinventing business processes. Please see that blog post for more details.

Differently from the panels, custom forms with PowerApps will be available for First Release tenants (not users), since once a custom form is set for a list, it will take effect for all users in that tenant that use that list.

Thanks for the update great new features coming!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Great news. Thanks for differentiating the tenancy type rollouts.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Will adding document attachments to custom Powerapps forms be included in the release?

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Pär Åberg, the initial release will have attachments show up as read-only. We are actively working on making those read-write by end of the year!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

I'm probably just impatient, but I still cannot see this experience on either my main tenant or dev tenant. Has the two week window slipped or am I missing something? What is the expected delivery of this new feature?

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Andrew Foster, yes, we are slightly delayed due to some deployment bumps. We are hoping to start to turn this on for First Release tenants on October 30.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

An update here. We discovered a late breaking issue that is blocking the release. We are investigating, and will update this thread with an updated estimate for when this will become available in First Release. Apologies for this delay.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

I have been waiting for this since Ignite. Are we able to get updates from the Message center some how? I can't seem to find it.

Will this update affect people filling out form that do not have a PowerApps license?

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Edit: it also applies to Libraries in our tenant.

Maybe the glitch is that the Lists are now broken, no top bar, no edit bar, no way to edit the list. This just started yesterday in my tenant across all Sites. Still waiting for my call back from Support.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi everyone, this will start rolling to First Release tenants week of November 13. We are sorry about the delay while we ironed out some of those late breaking bugs.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

This is great news! I can't wait to try it out. :)

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Thanks for the update

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi Kerem,

Do see the powerapps form customize option in my tenant

Works great in the web browser

But when viewing the list item on the SharePoint mobile app - it continues to use the default list form

Is there a setting for the same or this is the intended behavior

Regards,

Reza

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Reza Dorrani, thank you for noticing. We are at 50% of First Release tenants at the moment, and we will get to 100% of First Release tenants tomorrow.

Unfortunately the SharePoint mobile app does not yet support custom forms. This is something we are working on, and hope to make it available in a later release.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

This is now on for all of First Release tenants!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Awesome !!!

Kerem,
when will this feature be generally available?

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

We will be monitoring usage and our telemetry, and we hope to start rolling into the rest of the tenants in late November to early December.

Also see this post from the PowerApps blog announcing the feature.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hello Kerem,

When will the PowerApps customizing options be available?

I see the new pop-up forms which are a very welcome additional but I have no options to customize with PowerApps.

Thanks,

Jordan Burns

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi everyone,

We just added support for being able to write to managed metadata (taxonomy) columns in custom forms in First Release tenants. Please give it a try, and let us know your thoughts.

See this post:

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Jordan Burns, I suspect you are a First Release User (who have the feature for showing list forms in a panel), and not part of a First Release Tenant. The customize forms is a tenant wide setting, since we want to be able to consistently show all of the users of a list the same form.

We expect to start rolling out to Production tenants in by end of November, or early December.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

List forms are working great but I already noticed some problems:

  1. External users get Error message if PowerApps forms are enabled
  2. If PowerApp form is closed and user presses "(i) - details pane" it presents the "old" form
    • from my perspective PowerApps form should always be displayed if enabled and user should not get to use classic form

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Aleš Šavli, thank you for giving the new custom forms a try! We really appreciate it.

You caught one of the known issues regarding external users. PowerApps team is working on adding support for them at the moment, but for now external users will continue to get an error message.

Regarding not allowing customers to make changes using the standard forms, you can go into Advanced Settings under List Settings page, and disable "Quick Edit". This will remove the "Quick Edit" button from the ribbon, and additionally, it will make the details pane always show in read-only mode, and won't allow your users to make changes through these two routes.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Thanks Kerem!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

The forms panel is now live with 50% of our production customers. We plan to take it to 100% on Wednesday.

We are also currently rolling out the changes to support multi-value choice, people and lookup fields, being able to write to managed metadata columns, including multi-value managed metadata columns, as well as providing read-only access to attachments this week. By Wednesday all of our customers should have these capabilities in PowerApps.

This will prepare us to start rolling out the "Customize forms with PowerApps" feature starting next week.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

As promised, forms panel, and support for multi-value fields, writing to taxonomy fields, and read-only attachments are now available for all customers.

We are still planning to start rolling out custom forms next Monday (12/4).

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

nice update Kerem

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi Kerem,

This feature is awesome. Just wondering if you have an estimate when the powerapps custom forms can be seen from the sharepoint mobile app.

Regards,

Alfredo

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

10% of production tenants should now have the "Customize forms" button for their custom lists!

The plan is to extend this to half of production by Wednesday!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Thank you @Alfredo Avendano! We are still working on this, and I'll try to get an estimate for you by next week.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hello @Kerem Yuceturk

when instead the team suppose to complete the work to make possible to upload attachments with custom forms? I have a little project waiting for this feature.

However, what I can say is that yours is a great work: thanks a lot.

Marco

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

We are now at 50% of tenants in production for custom forms with PowerApps. We plan to go to all customers next week.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Thank you @Marco Mangiante! The PowerApps team is hard at work to allow uploading of attachments.

Our latest estimate is end of January to early February.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

"Customize Forms" button is now available for all users in modern lists!

Our customers who are using vanity domains may not see the button pending support for Open ID Connect functionality for their environments. This support is expected by January latest. Please feel free to send me a private message with your tenant details if you are not seeing the button so we can investigate and get back to you.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hello Kerem,

Is there any plans to support lists with multiple content types? When opening a list with multiple content types all of my fields across the content types are dumped into a single PowerApp Screen. I was trying to see if I could make multiple screens and use a rule based upon the content type to select the correct screen but haven't had any luck.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jordan Burns

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Jordan Burns, at the moment we don't have support for generating different pages for different content types on the list. We do, however, make the content type available as a column type so you can make changes to your form the way you want, but that leaves the work to you to make it happen. It should be doable with some work by showing/hiding the right columns based on what content type is picked. I'll try to get a sample app out with @Audrie Gordon from the PowerApps team to demonstrate it!

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

@Kerem Yuceturk

Is there a reason the pop-up form window wouldn't work on some lists? It seems sometimes I get a pop-up and sometimes I don't but I can't seem to figure out why it doesn't work. For example my list with multiple content types some of the content types pop-up in the form while some load to a new page. Is this something I should put in a support ticket for?

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Jordan Burns, we are also aware of some reports from inside Microsoft that we are investigating that may be related. To be safe, please start a support ticket if you can, and feel free to let me know via private message where it goes so i can try to help.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

@Jordan Burns, we identified an issue where a performance optimization causes your custom forms to not launch if you happen to try to open the forms soon after a page loads. If you wait for a few seconds without clicking anything, and then click they should still open fine.

We have a fix in the works, and will try to get it out as soon as we can, sorry about the inconvenience this caused.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

I have noticed that the new form does not have standard automatically generated metadata, such as Created by, Created [time], Version, Changed By, Change [time].  IS there a way to bring them back to the form?  When I open it via PowerApps customization it says that they are visible but I do not see them on the form.

Thanks.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Andrey Kiselev, these fields are automatically filled out by the system when an item is created or modified. So even if you have these on the form, they will appear as empty in the new form, since the values are not yet known. If you are seeing them in PowerApps studio, but they don't appear on the form in SharePoint, they may be below the fold depending on your screen resolution and the number of fields you have. Sometimes it is not apparent with the current design that there are more fields to show and you have to know to scroll down the field. Maybe that's the case?

Please send me a private message with screenshots if you are seeing an issue, and we can dig into it and figure it out.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

The Power App form is great but I'm getting a small issue. When I customize the New form of the list I cant add Attachment field, it's limited to Edit and Display mode only and yet in edit mode there is no way the attachment can be edited it simply downloads the attachment file. Could you guide me in adding the Attachment field to the New form of any Generic List.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Ashwin Kheta

as stated in a previous reply to me by @Kerem Yuceturk they are working on it.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Jordan Burns, the fix for the form failing to open issue is rolled out to all customers as of Wednesday morning (pacific time). Please refresh your pages and let us know if you are still seeing the issue. Thank you for your patience while we fixed the issue.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi @Marco Mangiante@Ashwin Kheta, sorry I got my answers crossed just earlier. :)

The attachment write feature is under development, sorry to keep you waiting for it, we really want to complete it as soon as possible too. Our best guess is February 2018 at the moment.

Kerem,

You also responded to another person in this thread about getting an estimate "next week" when SharePoint Mobile App would support SharePoint custom forms using PowerApps. I don't see this on the Office 365 roadmap. Can you provide an update.

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi Kerem, I have been working with the customise forms as we try and begin to migrate away from InfoPath. I have to say that I am impressed with the way it is heading and there is quite a bit of flexibility with having the full powerapps functionality. One thing, is there a plan to enable the lists to be saved as a template which include the powerapps form, or some other way of re-using the powerapps form with a list? Currently if you save the list as a template when it is used again the form goes to default, meaning one has to build the entire app again which is a bit of a show stopper for us!! Thanks, Jack

Re: Update to forms in Modern Lists, including custom forms with PowerApps - coming soon!

Hi Jack!

You definitely should take a look at Plumsail Forms. This tool allows you to design forms for modern lists and libraries, it supports all SharePoint fields for both reading and writing and since it saves each form as a separate modern page, they can be easily transferred within a site template.
