Onedrive for Business Download Folder that was Shared With Me Fails

I have a client who is trying to download a folder from his Shared with Me section in OneDrive for business.  He can download the files inside the folder, but when he clicks the download button inside OneDrive for Business he gets an error.  He can download folders in his own account just not ones that were "Shared".  What is the hangup? To my understanding OneDrive allows downloading whether it's view or edit rights - so nothing should be blocking him.

  • Does he have access to all files in the folder that you have shared?

There also might be a file issue with one of the files in the folder preventing it from being downloaded, can you download the same folder from your side?

I have tested both downloading a file and folder from shared with me section of my Tenant and there is no issues, failing the top two options it would be worth raising a support ticket from inside your Admin portal for Microsoft to have a look.

  • Hi Justin,

There should be no issues with downloading a file from the "Shared with me" section in OneDrive for Business. Do you happen to know what the error message was?

Did you share the file from your OneDrive or a SharePoint site? It is possible to prevent shared files from being downloaded using permissions, so it may be an issue with the source file's location or sharing settings.

Thanks for your reply - the issue is only with downloading a Folder.  Files are fine.  When he selects a folder, and clicks the download button he receives an error about services being unavailable.  It was shared from OneDrive - not Sharepoint.

I read the link you provided - Would that keep a user from being able to download a folder when they can download the files in that folder? Or is it possible the folder was created on Sharepoint and the files added from OneDrive?  Thus the permissions on the files are different than the folder?  It seems odd that he can see the folder and has the button to download it - but can't.  Also odd that he's not receiving a permissions error.
